Overview of 27 Days Chulu East Peak Climbing

On the Annapurna Circuit route with Thorang-la, enchanting forest of rhododendrons-firs and hemlocks, traditional ancient villages, Buddhist culture, on the trans-Himalayan trade route, breathtaking scenery of the snow capped mountain range from sub-tropical-alpine to arctic terrain”.

Trekking northwards from the road head at Beshishar and Ngadi entering the gorge of the Marsyangdi River, which cuts through the great Himalaya chain of high peaks between the Annapurnas and Manaslu, creating a valley that transcend by the high pass of Thorang-la to the deepest gorge of Kali-Gandaki river Valley which again cuts through the high mountain range of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna, beginning the adventure from the Hindu dominated farmland of Nepal’s ‘middle hills’ into the high alpine region on the north side of the Annapurnas, which is the domain of Tibetan Buddhism culture making this adventure very picturesque from every aspect of trekking environments for which Nepal is famous.

Chulu East (6,200 m.) is situated high above the Manang valley with breathtaking views across to the Annapurnas II, III and IV, Gangapurna, Glacier Dome, Dhaulagiri, Tilicho Peak and Manaslu. The climb is combined with the classic trek around the Annapurna massif, ascending the Marshyangdi valley and crossing the Thorung La, before descending the Kali Gandaki valley to Pokhara. The climb is technically straightforward and, you should be familiar with the use of your equipment, crampons, harness, ice axe, tying knots and handling climbing ropes. Most of the climbing will be involved walking roped together, including the glacial crossings. You Should be very fit and have good experience of climbing.

Weather gave unexpected memory in Chulu East

Twenty seven days is a big commitment but this isn’t really a trek, it’s a proper climb with a trek attached. High camp at 5300m was brutal, three of us didn’t sleep more than a couple hours before the summit push. roped up for the final section, crevasse crossing that our guide had clearly done a hundred times before. coming down through thorong la and into muktinath a few days later felt almost easy by comparison, which says a lot about what came before it.

My first peak climb, chose a hard one apparently

Did a lot of high altitude trekking before but this was my first actual climb with rope and crampons involved, chulu east threw me in the deep end a bit. julu acclimatization days before the climb helped more than i expected. summit push from high camp was slow and cold, legs shaking near the top from a mix of exhaustion and nerves. Marpha’s apple brandy a week later tasted better than it probably should have. would recommend a guided climb like this before attempting anything bigger, learned a lot the hard way.
