Mardi Himal Trek Difficulty

The Mardi Himal trek is rated as easy to moderately difficult trail. You must walk 5 to 6 hours daily to reach your destination. In the lower section, you’ll walk through the rhododendron forest, which is shaded, sheltered, Soft ground and have Gentle incline. After Low Camp (3,100m) everything changes. Ridge opens wide. No tree cover. Wind picks up. Path narrows along the Mardi Himal ridge toward High Camp (3,700m). Not technical. But altitude plus wind plus hours of uphill wear your legs out.

The toughest day of the whole trip is at day 6. You push from High Camp (3,700m) to Base Camp (4,500m). That’s 800 meters up in about 3 hours. Steep grassy slopes. Some rocky bits. Past 4,000m, the air holds 60% of normal oxygen. Breathing gets shorter. Steps feel heavy. Some folks get mild headaches. Appetite might vanish for a bit. None of it is risky if you pace yourself and drink water. But it’ll catch you off guard if you’ve never been this high. The schedule spaces altitude out: Deurali 2,125m, Low Camp 3,100m, High Camp 3,700m. Each on separate days. Your body gets time to settle.

Yes, a beginner can trek to Mardi Himal. It is one of the best treks in Nepal, which takes only 5 hiking days. You have a decent daily climb and is gradual. Your body gets time to catch up.

No past trekking experience needed. No special gear either. The path is well marked the whole way. Your guide handles the directions, the route calls, and any weather decisions. Your porter takes the heavy bag. You just carry a small pack with water, a snack, and a jacket.

That said, a bit of fitness goes a long way. If 3 to 4 hours of uphill walking on uneven ground feels doable at home, you’ll manage this trek. Never hiked more than a day before? Do a few practice walks in the weeks leading up to your flight. Even 2 or 3 weeks of daily walking changes how your legs feel on the trail.

Looking for something even shorter? The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is another solid pick in the same Annapurna zone. And if Mardi Himal makes you want more, you can link into the Annapurna Base Camp Trek from parts of this trail.

After a cold afternoon on the ridge, everyone packs into that dining room. A few places offer hot showers for a small charge, but past Low Camp don’t count on it.

Three meals daily. Breakfast, lunch, dinner. Menus list dal bhat (lentils and rice), noodle soups, fried rice, pasta, pancakes, eggs. Tea, coffee, biscuits, fruit too. Cooked fresh. Fills you up more than you’d guess. Vegetarian or vegan? Tell your guide day one. Teahouses adjust.

Essential Trip Information

Different Routes to Reach Mardi Himal Trek

There are two starting points for the Mardi Himal trek. Both routes begin with a short ride from Pokhara.

Standard route: Phedi. Walk up through Dhampus, Pothana, and Deurali. Forest closes in. Ridge trail carries you to Low Camp, High Camp, and Base Camp. Our itinerary uses this path. Climb is gentle. Better for altitude adjustment. The forest between Deurali and Low Camp is the prettiest part of the whole walk.

Other option: Kande (Australian Camp). Skips Dhampus. Joins the Deurali trail directly. Saves a couple of hours. But you miss the Dhampus walk and the gradual warm-up Phedi gives.

On the return for both routes, our plan avoids backtracking. You descend through Siding village (1,750m) and walk to Lumre, where a vehicle collects you for Pokhara.

Best Season for Mardi Himal Trek

The best months for the Mardi Himal trek is between March to May (Spring) and September to November (Autumn). You’ll get Stable weather, blue skies, and the sharpest mountain views.

Spring fills the forest with rhododendron blooms. Deurali to Low Camp turns red and pink in March-April. Beautiful walk when the flowers are out. The temperature on the day at High Camp sits around 5 to 10 degrees Celsius, and during the nighttime it drops to minus 5 degrees.

Autumn pulls the biggest trekking crowds in thetrail. After monsoon clears in September. Skies go sharp. October and November give the crispest mountain views. Dry ground. Comfortable walking temps.

Also doable in August and December. August brings leeches in lower forest. Some rain. Upper ridge stays mostly dry, though. December-January means freezing nights at High Camp. Minus 10 to minus 15. But also clear skies. Almost no other trekkers.

Yes, two of them. The Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and a TIMS card. Our team sorts both out. The cost is already inside the package price.

Mardi goes higher, 4,500m versus 3,210m, and takes a day or two more. The ridge section above the tree line is open and exposed to wind. Neither trek asks for technical climbing though. If Poon Hill felt comfortable, Mardi Himal will be within your reach with a bit of extra training.

NTC (Nepal Telecom) works at most spots up to High Camp. Above that, signal comes and goes. Some lodges sell WiFi for a small charge but speeds are poor. Pack a power bank so your devices stay charged.

No. The package has the bus journey between Kathmandu and Pokhara (around 7 hours). If flying sounds better (25 minutes), we set it up at an added cost. Just mention it when you book.

Yes, it’s possible. From certain spots on the Mardi trail, you can link into the ABC route. That adds extra days and extra permits. Let us know and we’ll create a combined itinerary that joins both treks.
